Inquiry into Managing fatigue in transport

Background

Human error is wideley recognised as a causal factor in many accidents in transport. A great deal is already known about the contribution of alcohol and speed to accidents involving human error. Although knowledge of fatigue is increasing, particularly in road transport, the contribution of fatigue to accidents involving human error is not fully understood or appreciated.

This inquiry will go beyond road and rail and include sea and air transport, which to date have not received the same level of community attention. The issue of managing fatigue is important to any industry that involves shift work, such as mining, hospitals, emergency services, and even hospitality. As an occupational health and safety issue it has ramifications for both employers and employees. Therefore, the committee members would like to gather evidence from as many sources as possible so that the issue of managing fatigue can be tackled effectively and comprehensively.
