Joint Standing Committee on Treaties

Committee activities (inquiries and reports)

Australia - United States, Free Trade Agreement

The Minister for Trade, the Hon Mark Vaile MP, has referred the proposed Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the United States to the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties for inquiry and report.

The Committee invites interested individuals and organisations to make a submission to the inquiry. As the Committee aims to report by 23 June 2004, submissions should be forwarded to the secretariat by 13 April 2004. In order to facilitate electronic publishing of submissions, the Committee would appreciate receiving electronic copies by email or sent on disk to the secretariat.

The treaty text and the Guide to the Agreement can be downloaded from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website at DFAT. Please be aware that the file sizes for the documents may cause delays with downloading. At this stage hard copies of the treaty are not available from the committee secretariat.

It should be noted that the treaty documents are draft only and subject to legal review for accuracy, clarity and consistency.

The Committee has agreed on an initial program of public hearings in each State and Territory. This may be subject to change, and more hearings may be announced as the inquiry progresses.
