Standing Committee on Petitions

The Standing Committee on Petitions was established under Standing Order 220. The Committee receives and processes petitions, and inquires into and reports to the House on any matter relating to petitions and the petitions system. The rules for petitions are set out in these standing and sessional orders.

Information on how to go about petitioning the House of Representatives is available at the petitions page. To assist with drafting a petition you can download a proforma petition (90KB) document with explanatory notes.

The Committee's report on the inquiry into the work of the first Petitions Committee is now available.

About the Petitions Committee

Petitioning is the most direct way for people to communicate with the Parliament.

In this video presentation from the About the House TV program, first screened in August 2008, the Chair of the first Petitions Committee, Julia Irwin MP, discusses changes to the petitioning process which were implemented in the 42nd Parliament.
