National Conference of Parliamentary Environment and Public Works Committees

4.1

The Eleventh Annual Conference of Parliamentary Environment and Public Works Committees was hosted by the Public Works Committee of the Queensland Parliament. It was held in Brisbane and Cairns from 24 to 27 July 2006.

4.2

The conference was attended by delegates from the relevant parliamentary committees of the Commonwealth, and of all Australian States and Territories. International delegates included members of the New Zealand Local Government and Environment Committee.

4.3

The Committee was represented at the conference by Deputy Chair Mr Brendan O'Connor MP and Senator Stephen Parry.

4.4

The theme of the 2006 conference was Ecotourism and developing infrastructure in environmentally sensitive areas. The programme included addresses by:

  • Hon Tony McGrady MP, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland;
  • Mr David Morgans, Director, Destination Queensland, Tourism Queensland;
  • Mayor Ron Clarke, Gold Coast City Council;
  • Mr Luke Christensen, Binna Burra Mountain Lodge;
  • Mr Ralph Henderson, Director, Tourism and Visitor Management, QPWS;
  • Associate Professor Richard Hyde, Centre for Sustainable Design, Department of Architecture, University of Queensland;
  • Mr Andrew Skeat, Executive Director, The Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators;
  • Mr Col McKenzie, Executive Director, The Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators;
  • Ms Anita Pleuger, Green Island Resort;
  • Mr Steve Howarth, Chief Engineer, Green Island Resort; and
  • Ms Chelsea Ingwersen, Environmental Manager, Great Adventures.

In addition to the addresses listed above, the programme included field trips to Couran Cove; Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, Lamington National Park; Green Island; the Great Barrier Reef; and Kuranda.

Delegates were given the opportunity to present papers outlining the work of their respective committees through 2006.

4.7

At the conclusion of the conference, delegates expressed their gratitude to the Parliament of Queensland for hosting a highly informative and successful event. The 2007 conference will be hosted by the Northern Territory Environment and Sustainable Development Committee.
